I Moved the Day After Christmas

No, I’m not kidding.  I totally got the keys to our new place at 9 am on December 26th.  It’s funny, real estate can get kind of quiet around the holidays, but I tell ya, this year it’s just hoppin’.  Maybe its because I’m working differently than I normally do, maybe our market is on freakin’ FIRE, or maybe like me, others have not seen the holidays as this massive hurdle to moving.  When I told my very sweet and sensitive seven year old we were going to move the day after Christmas, she was very much and frequently vocally against it.  But, Jesus’s birthday or not, we got a great deal on a fantastic place that we are very happy to have.  So we moved.  And I found that there are some awesome benefits to moving the day after Christmas:

1.  Family is already in town!  You just say, “Glad you enjoyed the humongous dinner I just cooked, while you were clearing the table I made up some boxes in the garage.  Let’s pack.”  And they do it!  Well, mine did.

2.  Instead of wrapping your breakables in brown paper or newspaper, you can use the sparkly green and red holiday tissue paper.  It’s way more fun.

3.  Many of the kids toys (the newly gifted ones) are already in boxes!  You just throw them in one bigger box, haul them over to the new place with a pair of scissors, and they are entertained while you work.

4.  The leftovers.  You do not have to cook while moving!  And you don’t have to order out every meal.  Just put a ham at the new place, the turkey at the old one, and you and your helpful elves will have something to dine on.

5.  Instead of telling the kids they have to clean out old toys for moving you can tell them its to make more room for more toys.  My kids are little hoarders.  They will keep a stupid Jeep toy with three missing wheels just for the heck of it.  I promise, they have plenty of toys.  But if I tell them they have to clean the junk out to move, they cry.  If I say its to make room for toys from Santa they are much more cooperative.

We still have lots to do, wish us luck!  I hope you had a wonderful holiday season, we have one more to go so Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas from Chandler 2011

Merry Christmas!  The kids and I had a wonderful day!  We are so thankful to be surrounded by those we love. I hope you and your friends and family had a wonderful day too, filled with love, joy and blessings.

A mom friend on the school playground asked me one morning what are the things to do during the holidays in the Phoenix area.  She’s new to Chandler and wanted to make sure her family hit the highlights.  So I’ve been thinking about all the fun things to do in the Valley of the Sun during the holidays, here are some I’ve come up with:

ZooLights at the Phoenix Zoo

Polar Express at the Grand Canyon

North Pole Experience at Greer Lodge

Las Noches de las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Gardens

What did you and your family do this year that you enjoyed?

Moving Kit

As I sit here blogging, yes, blogging, on Christmas night, I must make two confessions:

1.  I made a bet with a friend that I would blog at least twice a week for a certain period of time and I have not written my two for this week.  And since I refuse to lose, I am blogging on Christmas.

2.  I suck at moving.  Seriously.  Realtors are supposed to give all sorts of great advice for packing tips, moving tips, etc.  And I can totally give them, but don’t take them.  But here are a few tidbits I learned the hard way over the years.  (My first move from a house to a house, my friends showed up to help us move and I had only packed like 5 small boxes and didn’t even have more boxes.  Told you I suck at moving.)

I think a “Moving Kit” would be an awesome thing to have on hand.  You’d probably need two, one for the house you are moving from and one for the house you are moving to.  Disclaimer: I have not tried this but I think it could be genius with some refinement.  In the moving kit I would have:

1.  Toilet paper, like a few rolls, not just a partial roll in the upstairs bath.
2.  Paper towels
3.  Screwdriver, I love mine that has the switchable end – phillips, standard, big, little
4.  That putty stuff to fill nail holes.  I’m not always this dingy, it’s late and I’ve been up since before 6 am.
5.  Water bottles.  Lots and lots of ‘em.
6.  Caffeine
7.  A phone charger
8.  Food, a good variety
9.  Basic cleaning supplies
10.  A broom
11.  Flashlight
12.  Step ladder

If you have things you would include or find that you wish you had easily on hand during moves, I would really appreciate the tips!

My Garage Sale

So y’all know about my garage sale compulsion.  Yesterday I had a garage sale of my own!  It was very exciting.  The moment the bright pink signs went up, I had trucks following me home.  Funny thing, whenever I sell my personal belongings, I’m reminded of selling homes.  I sold some stuff at Park ‘n’ Swap a while back, I don’t think I shared about that experience because I didn’t have hardly anything positive to say.

Anyways.  I was kind of a p.i.t.a. (pain in the a$$) seller.  There were too many things that I had too much emotional attachment to.  Like half the stuff in the driveway.  I felt guilty (ugh. mom guilt.) about getting rid of some of the kids toys, even though they totally have too many.  So if people weren’t willing to pay close to my asking price, I just looked at them like, take it or leave it, whatever, I’ll just put it back in my kids’ rooms.  Even though I confess my kids are pretty rough on toys and I probably should have discounted my prices.  And I don’t want to move the things in the driveway, I had committed to selling them (duh, I put them in the freaking driveway), and my kids are about to get way better things for Christmas.  See where I’m going?

I think some home sellers might sometimes be the same way.  You have this thing you are definitely emotionally attached to.  How could you not be?  It’s the place where your kids came home from the hospital when they were born, the place where you entertained friends and family, what could be more personal and emotional than your home?  One day you commit to selling it for whatever reason – you need somewhere bigger/ smaller, you can’t afford the payments, job relocation, whatever.  And you know that selling your house is the right decision.  But then a buyer comes along, offers less, and it is so tempting to just say, “well, then I just won’t move!”

As someone is standing there, offering you less than what you had hoped to get, it’s very hard to remember why you are selling in the first place.  Yesterday I had to stay focused on the reasons those things were offered for sale.  At the end of the morning, I was thrilled to have achieved my sales goal and I have less stuff that we don’t need.  It’s kind of liberating and exciting.  Fingers crossed the kids don’t ask me where all the Fisher Price Little People went!

Northshore Condos at Tempe Town Lake

Sometimes one of the awesome parts of my job is that I get to take my kids to work with me.  On this particular day, my daughter came along while I previewed a pretty cool condo for an out-of-town client.  She had a great time and love, love, loved the building.  She kept saying “it’s so pretty!”  She’s quite the fancy, fashionable little thing, so coming from her it’s quite a compliment.  We were at Northshore Condos just north of Arizona State University, just north of Tempe Town Lake, just south of the 202 freeway and off the east side of Rural.  Aka awesome location.

My fancy girl at Northshore Condos in Tempe

There are 134 condos in the Northshore building, some of them have awesome views of Tempe Town Lake, Sun Devil Stadium, and the community pool.  Check out these views!

View from the patio of one of the condos. WOW!

Northshore Condos Lobby

Current homes for sale in Northshore Condos can be seen online here, and if you’d like to see them in person email or call me!
